Floodgate Services

Defence Doors Ltd offers a full design, build and installation service to the construction industry, the private sector and direct to the Environment Agency. Supplying steel floodgates manufactured to the highest standards and the latest Environment Agency requirements.

Floodgates are supplied generally as an epoxy coated steel structure for inland flood defences and sheltered coastal applications with alternative 316L stainless steel floodgates for harsh marine and exposed environments.

Our standard frame designs suit ninety percent of applications but these standard details will be reconfigured if required for bespoke floodgates, customizing the design and ensuring the flood gates meet the client s exact requirements and the site structures.

Inland flood gates

Floodgates for river defences are designed to withstand to a static head of water generally with an overtopping safety factor of 200mm. For the larger river systems there may be a requirement for additional loads or impact loads to be taken into account from floating debis. Flood gates are supplied with a full set of auto cad drawings and comprehensive set of design calculations to prove the integrity of the structure ensuring they comply with the flood gate design specifications.

Gates are supplied as either single or double leaf hinged assemblies operable by a single person in just a few seconds, the design is robust and simple, manufactured from standard parts, requires no maintenance other than the annual greasing of the hinge assemblies with no requirement to raise or lower seal assemblies.

Storm gates for coastal defence

Exposed coastal flood gates can be subjected to high wave loading, impact debris thrown up by heavy seas and tidal surges. The design and construction of these gates allow for these additional loads imposed on the structure and should be specified at the design stage.

Protective considerations

Inland floodgates are supplied with an optional full 400 micron epoxy paint system and a hot metal fire spray base coat ensuring the steelwork on the gate is fully protected for a minimum period of 10- 15 years to first maintenance. The floodgate hinge unit contains bearing and stainless steel hinge pins as standard, unpainted latch parts on these floodgates are supplied in zinc plated finish and can be replaced with stainless steel if specified.

Standard steel thresholds should be replaced with stainless steel threshold plates in areas of high pedestrian and vehicular traffic and should be specified at the design stage

Storm gates for coastal defence

Coastal flood gates are subjected to high wave loading and impact debris thrown up by heavy seas and tidal surges. The design and construction of these gates allows for these additional loads imposed on the structure and are included in the initial design calculations. In such hostile environments a paint system may offer little protection from water bourne debris and serious consideration should be given to replacing all steel stations with 316L stainless steel.

Stop Logs

An alternative flood defence solution to the permanent flood gates are demountable stop logs. The can be installed where steel flood gates or watertight doors have an unacceptable visual impact on a property or area.

These units are a light weight alternative to steel flood gates offering a rapidly deployed flood defence system of flood barriers. The boards are manufactured from UPVC, they are strong, unobtrusive when not deployed and non corrosive. The alloy frame shown on the image is powder coated in white but can be re-painted to suite the surrounding brick or stone work if required after installation.

The stop log frame assembly is permanently fixed to the wall and rebated onto the floor, carefully positioned to minimize the visual appearance and remove potential trip hazards.

The stop log panels are manufactured in board heights of 200mm allowing an increase or decrease of protection as flood levels rise and fall.

All components and seals are impervious to pollutants or salt water guaranteeing long serviceable watertight structure when deployed.

This flood defence system carries a BS kite mark PAS 1188 and a patent design, the system has been tested to a water pressure of 3.4 tonnes and a depth of 1100mm.

Single stop logs are available up to a width of 2.5mtrs up to 1100mm high, after this width the flood barrier requires removable posts at 2.5mtr maximum increments.

The flood barriers are retained by quick acting clip assemblies and installed with on seat water pressure (water pushing the stop log onto the frame) These are used as flood defences to protect door ways, window, patio doors, drive ways and garage doors.

Water tight covers are also available to protect your propery from the ingress of flood water through air brick openings.
